Based on research literature retrieved from China National Knowledge Infrastructure database (CNKI) and Web of Science Core Collection database (WoS CC), this study conducts a systematic literature review of industrial cluster ecosystems in the field of economics and management at home and abroad. Data analysis employs bibliometric techniques and visualization tools, such as keyword co-occurrence and cluster analysis, timeline view map and burst detection analysis, and article co-citation analysis. The results are as follows: (1) The overall stream of related researches can be summarized into four topics. The first topic is the organizational co-governance perspective, which highlights multi-actor governance systems based on the stakeholder theory. The second is the environmental harmony perspective, which is mainly associated with environmental factors supporting sustainable development. Within the value co-creation perspective, industrial cluster ecosystems provide a context that is conducive for value creation and realization, which represents the third topic. The final topic shown is the ecological symbiosis perspective, which contributes to the roles of both competition and cooperation in cluster co-evolution. (2) Tracking knowledge evolution in industrial cluster ecosystem research, the process of development is divided into three stages, namely, the initial stage (1992-2004), the exploration stage (2005-2016) and the rapid development stage (2017-present). The discussion of the three stages shows how the literature has evolved from the early conceptual metaphor based on analogical thinking, to systematic exploration focusing on innovation, and reflected a growing trend toward theoretical integration among social sciences. (3) The major research methods used in the literature reviewed are qualitative analysis methods, including constructive approaches, case studies and static analyses. However, quantitative methods for assessing and measuring characteristics and performance of cluster ecosystems are increasing recently. As a result of the review, a quintuple helix model of industrial cluster ecosystems has been developed to build a theoretical framework that reflects the complex interconnection among internal mechanisms, external conditions and research foundations. Finally, future research efforts in this area should be directed towards introducing specific analysis to understand heterogeneous industrial scenarios, exploring innovation network reconstruction of virtual industrial clusters, focusing on adaptive institutional change by integrating explicit and implicit coordination mechanisms, improving cluster platform architecture to support ecological upgrading, and emphasizing public participation in value co-creation and sharing within clusters.
